Larry Chafin Resource Development Committee Chairman
Larry, was born in 1951 and raised in Logan County at Sarah Ann, West Virginia, where during his childhood days, he was privileged to play, hunt, fish and explore the hills, bottoms and streams that surrounded his community and the Home Place and properties that was previously owned by Captain Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, the famous leader of the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s Feud.
Larry began his education attending the 1st and 2nd grades in a one room, wood school building and heated by a coal stove, located at Crystal Block, West Virginia an adjoining community of Sarah Ann, He continued his elementary and Junior. H.S. at Stirrat and Omar also nearby communities, before graduating High School in 1969 at Logan High School, Logan, West Virginia where after School he would shine shoes at a local Shoe Shop and worked as a Stock Boy at a small grocery store on weekends in his Community of Sarah Ann.
After getting to know local business owners and noticed for his work ethics, he was offered a job opportunity with Island Creek Coal Company in there Engineering / Mine Drafting and Surveying Department, he continued his experience by accepting other job offers in engineering from major Coal Companies such as the Pittston Coal Group and subsidiaries of Wheeling Pittsburgh Coal Group in Logan County, later he become the General Manager of Coal & Crane Real Estate Trust, landowners of the minerals rights of Coal, Timber and Gas in Logan and surrounding Counties as well.
In 1980 he started a Hydraulic Repair and Fabrication business in Sarah Ann, West Virginia and served as President of the Incorporation with his brother as a Co-Owner, recognizing the decline in the Coal Industry, the brothers started a Full Convenient Store with a Deli and Gas station serving the residents of Sarah Ann and Mingo County.
Larry, is married to Kathy Jeffrey Chafin, they have two adult Daughters and one Granddaughter, he is a current member of several Fraternal and Civic Organizations, such as the Masons, a 33° Scottish Rite Freemason, Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar, Order of Eastern Star, Lions Club and Odd Fellows.
He has served on several Nonprofit and Tax Exempt organizations Board of Directors and Committees, organized and assisted with numerous Fundraising events and activities and is knowledgeable with the Nonprofit process, applications, guidelines and compliance at both the State and Federal Levels.
Kathy Jeffrey Chafin Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
Kathy is a 1971 graduate of Logan High School, married for 49 years and has two wonderful daughters and one granddaughter, Kathy has always been known for her willingness to volunteer in her communities and schools, she is a past member of the Parents Teacher Association (PTA), currently a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Omar Women’s Club, administrator for Omar Memories Facebook Group and a member Logan Lions Club.
Janet Collier Nichols Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
Janet is a 1971 graduate of Logan High School, a West Virginia University graduate, retired register nurse (RN) from Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee a current member of Logan Lions Club and Logan Kiwanis Club.
Brandon Ray Kirk Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
Brandon joins our team with an impeccable Bio, He is a 1990 graduate of Harts High School, a former Library Assistant at James E. Morrow Library, Research and Writing at Hartford Music in Tennessee, former substitute Teacher at Lincoln County Schools, former reporter for at Lincoln Independent Newspaper and the Logan Banner, former Advanced Placement History Teacher at Harts High School, former Teacher at Chapmanville High School and Placement History Teacher and currently an Associate Professor of History and the Historian for the City of Logan a member of the Logan Lions Club, Logan Kiwanis Club and the International Order of Odd Fellows, Logan Chapter #274 in Logan, West Virginia
Dwight Williamson Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
Dwight is a current Logan County Magistrate and has served Logan County for 21 years. He studied at Marshall University, is a continuing columnist for the Logan Banner, Williamson Daily News, Coal Valley News and Lincoln County Journal. He is also the longest ever-serving member of Pride Inc. Board of Directors, not to mention an avid lover of history, especially local history.
John “Keith” White Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
Keith is the current director of Logan County Family Resource Network. During his high school years, he was involved with the Key Club at Logan High School. In 2017, he joined the Logan Kiwanis Club and served as Club President for two years before becoming Lt. Governor. Keith is a volunteer for Make-A-Wish, an ordained minister, WV Kiwanis Club Trustee and serves on the CORE team for Wild Wonderful Healthy Logan County.
John Kovach Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
My name is John Kovach. I was born in Logan County and grew up at Whitman, WV. I am a lifelong resident of West Virginia and presently reside in Chapmanville. I graduated from Logan High School and attended Marshall University. I am married to Lana Turner and our blended family consists of three daughters, one son and five grandchildren. I am a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan where I serve as Elder.
I am retired from Verizon Telephone Company after 33 years of service and have worked as a Professional Surveyor.
I have been a member of the Logan Jaycees and the Logan Lions Club. I helped establish the Verdunville Volunteer Fire Department where I served as Assistant Chief and Chief.
I have been a member of the Great Kanawha Resource, Conservation and Development Council since 2009 and am now serving as Chairman. This council is made up of representatives from ten counties in our areas. One of my greatest accomplishments on this council was that I spearheaded the process of getting the Guyandotte River designated as a water trail.
Michael Gibson Resource Development Committee (Team Member)
Michael Gibson was Born and raised in Man, Wv and currently resides in Switzer, WV. He graduated from Man High School and attended Southern WV Community College. He is a former coal miner and currently owns S&G Outdoors in Logan County, WV.
He is also a member of the Guyandotte water trail board and the Coal Heritage Trail. He hosted numerous clean ups for Logan County and constructed the new Hatfield and McCoy archery range at Chief Logan State Park.
He has 2 farms one in Roane County and one in Lincoln County and an avid farmer, hunter, and fisherman in his spare time.
